gothikmaus: (CSI - Nick/Greg)
It's already been a month since my last entry. My colleague is still on sick leave and just prolonged for another month. October is usually a quiet month for us, but this year we have 6 visits going on (luckily another colleague is helping, otherwise I'd be going crazy). Something might change in the not so distant future, but until I see it, I'm not going to believe it.

Other than that, I started thinking of this year's Advent Calendar. I don't think I'm gonna do a whole calendar like I did for the last few years, just the thought of writing 24 drabbles/ficlets makes me tired. But I'd still like to do something and I've actually already written a ficlet, so I'm thinking of just writing four, one for each Advent Sunday. I want it to be something fun, something I look forward to, not an additional source of stress. If I have the time and energy to write more, or draw something Christmas-related, all the better, but my goal right now is just those four.

I've finally gone back to working on a Nick/Greg fic I started a long time ago but never finished. It still needs work, but I like what I have so far. I want it to be a slow burn kinda fic, which is ridiculous, given my tendency to write almost exclusively ficlets and short stories, but I'm going to try anyway. As I was writing, I remembered there was another ficlet I started in response to a hurt/comfort prompt some time ago that I still need to finish. I think the fic has taken a slightly different direction from the original prompt, I might have to change a thing or two.

It feels good being back to writing Nick/Greg, it's become such a comfort pairing for me.

I also found some amazing Lupin/Jigen fanart on Twitter (or X, or whatever it's called these days, I never use it any more). The account hasn't been updated in a while, but there are a lot of great pics. A lot of them are NSFW, with some humour and angst thrown into the mix, so be careful when you click the link:

Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying).

We're only halfway through January and I already have 4 new WIPs, 2 CSI and 2 Lupin III.

CSI

  • A fluffy Nick/Greg ficlet inspired by this prompt.

  • A Nick/Greg fic in which Nick comes out to Warrick.

Lupin III

  • A Jigen-centric future fic inspired by the Jigen Daisuke film (apparently there are no fics related to that film on AO3? How is that possible?)

  • A smutty Lupin/Jigen fic inspired by Jigen's Gravestone.

And of course there's still that Nick/Greg fic I've been working on for the last couple of years, one of my goals for 2024 is to finally finish it.

As for fanart, I haven't started working on my Lunar New Year illustration yet, but I've already looked up references. Like the last two years, it will be silly and feature Greg Sanders from CSI.

So, yeah, I have quite a lot going on at the moment. Let's see what I'll actually finish...
gothikmaus: (*pout*)
I'm almost ready to post a new fanfic, but first, I need to vent a little. I got two comments on my latest CSI ficlet the other day. At first, I was really happy: the Nick/Greg fandom is so small and quiet, I get only a handful of comments (when I get any!), so I cherish each and every one of them. But at the same time, I had a nagging suspicion: they were both left from guest accounts and seemed a bit weird. Today I received two more comments on the same ficlet, again from guest accounts and again, something was off. I mean, I love getting feedback, but I couldn't shake the feeling that they were bots. So I did a bit of research and it seems those comments were indeed submitted by bots. Which is really disheartening: I get such a morale boost any time I see an AO3 comment notification in my inbox, now bots are ruining this too?

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm going to whine a little today. Don't get me wrong: CSI has literally kept me sane during a very tough time and I'm extremely happy I discovered Nick/Greg fanfiction, I haven't been this productive in years. But, man, is it difficult being in a semi-dead fandom. New fics are very rare, and every time I post something on AO3, I typically get just a handful of kudos and maybe one comment. I'm so used to receiving minimal feedback that every time I get mote than that, or when I receive AO3 notifications, my smile is so big my face hurts afterwards. I'm grateful to each person who uses some of their time to read my stories, but I really miss fandom interaction. Maybe I'm just biased: I still remember the fun I used to have in some LJ communities years ago and I've been trying to find something similar, but I guess things are just too different now (nostalgic Millenial? Who, me?)

Anyway. Just before writing this entry I checked the Nick/Greg tag on AO3, just to prove my point and, lo and behold, someone posted a new podfic and a new fic! There might still be hope after all.
gothikmaus: (Default)
I watched a grand total of 3 (three) episodes of the MacGyver reboot (1x1, 1x2 and 1x12), and only because I'd seen a few screen caps that got me curious, and what did I do last night? That's right: I wrote a ficlet on my mobile while I was already in bed. *facepalm* The series in itself is okay, but I don't think I'll watch all the episodes, so hopefully I won't get as obsessed as I did with CSI. But after watching a certain scene from episode 12 yesterday, I just had to write that ficlet. And it's not even slash! *dramatic gasp* As if I didn't have half a dozen WIPs I should be working on instead.

Anyway. I think I'll work some more on it in the next days and then post it for George Eads Appreciation Week on Tumblr. In the meantime I have a 5+1 Things fic ready to be posted on Valentine's Day and a couple other ficlets that might get posted before the end of the month. I'm also thinking of some fanart, but we'll see about that.

It looks like the inspiration fairy hasn't abandoned me yet...

Challenge # 8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think my biggest accomplishment of 2021, fandom-wise, was writing the 24 ficlets for the Nick/Greg Advent Calendar. I had written a Good Omens Advent Calendar in 2020 (I actually came up with the prompts myself for that one), but I didn't write anything for most of 2021, so I didn't think I would be inspired enough to do the same last year, but as soon as I saw the prompt list, I just knew it would work. It was an absolute joy writing those ficlets.

Non-fandom wise, I'm quite proud of the short story I wrote for a literary contest. It didn't get shortlisted for the "final round", but it was an interesting experiment and a challenge: I wanted to prove to myself I could do it, and I did. Yes, I was very disappointed when my story wasn't shortlisted but, hey, maybe I'll try again this year.

H-How?

Somebody please stop me. On top of working on a Nick/Greg fic I started after watching episode 11x12 and on the Advent Calendar ficlets (I'm almost halfway through), I'm also writing a Nick/Greg Halloween ficlet.

I can't remember the last time I was working on three fics at the same time, I'm usually very slow and can only handle one fic at a time. I sometimes get unrelated ideas and write them down to work on them later, but this? This is crazy. I just hope I can polish it up and post it in time for Halloween.
gothikmaus: (Berlin)
Did I say I would not "contribute actively to the CSI fandom"? Did I? Then why am I writing a Nick/Greg fic? *groans* For the moment I just have a couple of scenes, but they kept bugging me, so I just had to write them down to get them out of my head. Let's see if I can actually get a fic out of them.

The funny thing is, I'm supposed to focus on something else at the moment, not fanfiction and not even in English, but apparently once I start writing for something, another idea suddenly materialises, after months of no inspiration at all. Classic.

I also just found out that this autumn's DÄ tour has officially been cancelled. On the one hand I'm disappointed, because I was supposed to see them in Berlin on Halloween! How cool would that be? But I'm also relieved, as I wouldn't feel comfortable going to such a crowded concert in an indoors venue, but, knowing myself, I would've had an inner conflict about whether or not to go, because I'm just dying to see them live again.

Hopefully things will be better by next summer: I'm supposed to see them live at an open-air show, which I'm much more relaxed about. And it's at the former Tempelhof airport in Berlin! Just around the corner from where I lived in 2009/2010! I'm going to cry so, so much, I already know it...
gothikmaus: (Japan)
Ugh, I haven't updated in ages. Let's see, September was the usual chaos at work, with the added madness of some brand new rules that effectively stopped us from using some of our recurrent vendors and made it quite complicated to find new ones in the busiest time of the year. Fun.

On the fandom front, I drew something for Snektember, but didn't push myself too much, I knew from the start I would only be able to draw a few prompts. I also realised that some of the coloured pencils I've had for YEARS are actually watercolour pencils, so I decided to experiment a bit.

And today I went back to working on a fic I started last spring. It's almost finished anyway, I just need to write the end, but for some reason I just abandoned it and focused on drawing instead. Hopefully I'll be able to post it soon, maybe with an illustration? We'll see.

I should write more, but at the moment I just want to go to bed and read.

Day 11

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My creative process could be summed up in one word: slow. It usually takes me way too long to finish anything, unless it's a drabble or a short ficlet. I often start with just a scene or even a sentence in mind and build the story around it, so I don't have a clear idea of what's going to happen and sometimes the final story is quite different from the original idea. If I get stuck, I let the story rest (sometimes a few days are enough, sometimes it takes months!) and then go back to working on it. A few times I had to remove entire scenes in order to finish the story. It's not easy, especially if it's a scene I really like, but I've learned that sometimes such a "sacrifice" is necessary.

As for fanart, usually the first thing I do is looking up pose references, because I suck at drawing from memory and anatomy is not my forte. Sometimes I sketch something on paper and ink it on paper, sometimes I scan the sketch and ink/colour it in Photoshop, sometimes I draw the preliminary sketch directly in Photoshop.

As for how I feel when I'm done, it's a mix of satisfaction for finishing and anxiousness that the final product is not "good enough". Even when I'm happy with what I've written/drawn, there's always a lingering feeling of "What if there are typos, what if I forgot to draw a finger, what if..." every time I publish something.
gothikmaus: (King Mark)
I know I've mentioned it before, but I've been making progress with the Mystrade fic I've been working on for ages. I had to completely rethink a scene (my "favourite scene"), but it just wasn't working and I kept getting stuck there. With that big obstacle out of the way, I just need to stitch together the last scenes and that should be it. Fingers crossed.

Another big problem is that I'm never in the mood to do anything when I get home after work and I've been busy and/or not at home during the weekend, so that doesn't leave me much time to write. Hopefully I'll be able to finish and post it in the next few weeks. I can't believe I started writing this blasted fic just after The Abominable Bride! :O
gothikmaus: (King Mark)
I'm still (slowly) working on that Mystrade fic. I'll finish it one day, I promise. For the moment, I'll just share an LJ infographic that makes me sound ancient. XD

Ah, the good old days... )
gothikmaus: (Ginger alert!)
OMG I may have found a flat! :O I don't have a definitive answer yet, but this may be it. Please, keep your fingers crossed for me!

Also, I've been working on that Mystrade fic I mentioned in a previous post. I'm just adding a few paragraphs a day, so I don't expect to finish it anytime soon, but hey, at least I'm writing, right? The Final Problem was such a gift for Mycroft fans and Mystrade shippers, I still can't quite believe it really happened. ♥♥♥
gothikmaus: (King Mark)
As if I weren't enough of a Mark Gatiss fangirl already:

We have the exact same views on the Catholic Church (30:15). Also, the 1984 reference (38:20) made me squee. And his voice, God, his voice.

This improved my mood immeasurably. Even if the ending was a bit disturbing, skip the last couple of minutes if you're squeamish (it's about STDs).

Also, I read a short Mystrade ficlet last night and this morning I woke up with part of a Mystrade ficlet already formed in my mind, which I immediately wrote down. Let's see if I can do something about it...

At last

Finally! The Lestrade/Molly fic I've been working on for months is done! I still need to edit the last part and re-read the whole thing to make sure it makes sense, but most of the work should be done. I can't believe it took me so long to write little more than 4000 words, I'm such a slow writer. Oh, well, at least I was able to finish it.

Ad Astra

gothikmaus: (Ginger alert!)
I don't remember if I mentioned it here, but a few months ago I collaborated with a group of people who were working on a web series. When I attended the summer workshop in LA two years ago I met an Italian girl who was attending another workshop, we kept in touch and last year she contacted me, told me about this project and asked me if I wanted to help with the screenplay. I mostly had to "supervise" things, i.e. make sure there weren't mistakes, check for consistency issues, make suggestions to improve dialogues etc.

The "premiere", so to speak, was on Friday night in Mantua, a town a couple of hours away from where I live. It was nice to finally meet the people I had worked with. Also, I was shocked to see my name listed among the screenwriters! They did say my name would appear in the credits, but I thought it would be something like "The production would also like to thank...", I really wasn't expecting that.

It's a low-budget project and my input was limited, I only worked on it in my free time, but it was a great experience and I think the final result is really good. The episodes will be uploaded in the next days/weeks, here's the trailer. English subtitles should be available soon.

Also, I checked my Twitter timeline and saw this:

And Happy Easter to you too, Mr. Gatiss. XD

Writing

Apr. 6th, 2014 07:15 pm
gothikmaus: (Sherlock/John snow)
So much of fandom action has moved to Tumblr, I rarely post fandom-related stuff on LJ/DW any more. Which is a pity, as Tumblr doesn't really have a comment feature that allows discussions without having to reblog everything over and over. Or maybe I'm just used to how LJ works and I'm too lazy to change my ways.

Anyway, now that things are a bit more stable in RL, I felt like writing, so I started working on that Lestrade/Molly fic that's been in the back of my head ever since I saw TSoT. Which is strange: I've been reading nothing but Mystrade for 2 months, I thought I'd be inspired to write that pairing. But apparently I'm terrified of Mycroft. XD Or rather, I'm afraid I'd get his voice completely wrong and screw up everything. Molly and Lestrade, on the other hand, are more ordinary and approachable. And who knows, maybe later I'll feel confident enough to try my hand at some Mystrade. For now, though, I have little more than 500 words of Sherlock being his usual self and Lestrade being frustrated and trying not to strangle him. I have no idea how long it's going to be or how long it'll take me to finish it, I'm just happy I'm writing again.
gothikmaus: (Ginger alert!)
I... may have written a Sherlock fic. But I'm NOT going to post it now. It takes place during The Sign of Three, so it would make sense posting it before His Last Vow, but not now, a couple of hours before the episode is aired.

It's just a ficlet, but writing again feels so good, even if it's just a very short story. I've had this idea stuck in my head the whole week, but I just couldn't find the right words. And then today everything just sort of fell into place. Hopefully I'll still like it tomorrow.
gothikmaus: (Default)
Dear American people, I have a question about university/college. Yes, it's for a fic. When a university accepts you, do you need to go in for an interview as well? Would it make sense for a student in 11th grade to use spring break to have a look at different colleges? Or is that something you usually do after you've been accepted, so in 12th grade? Or you don't do it at all?

Sorry for the stupid question, but the university system is completely different here and I really have no clue.

Thanks!
