Challenge #15

Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

I wanted to post the last Snowflake entry during the month of January, but I had a slight change in plans these last couple of days. Anyway, a joyous moment from 2024 was definitely when some friends who play in a band dedicated "Black Celebration" to me during a concert. It was the weekend just after my birthday, which I promptly renamed "Black Celebration Weekend", because I went to see these friends on Friday night (they play '80s/New Wave/Electro covers) and then to a Depeche Mode concert on Saturday. I was really hoping they would dedicate that song to me, and was so, so happy when they did! :D

Challenge #14

In your own space, create your own fandom challenge.

I thought I wouldn't take part in this challenge, as I can never come up with ideas, but then I suddenly got inspired. Thus, I hereby present you...

The "Be kind to yourself" challenge!

I've seen a few challenges asking people to leave feedback on fics and art and that's very important, my day instantly improves whenever I receive a comment on my fics and/or art, but I think we should also learn to appreciate ourselves. Just the other day, I was at work thinking I still had X, Y and Z to finish, but when I checked, I realised I had already done everything. And, without thinking, I told myself "Well done!" It can seem such a small, silly thing, but as someone who used to be extremely self-deprecating, I can guarantee even these tiny comments make a difference.

So I'm asking you to give yourself some positive feedback. It can be anything: giving yourself a metaphorical pat on the shoulder for meeting a deadline, or writing a post in which you brag about a project you're really proud of, or looking at something you're working on and you're frustrated with and saying "Okay, this isn't coming along as I had envisioned. It's time to take a break, maybe when I come back to it, it won't seem so bad."

My own positive feedback for myself is that I'm very happy with the pictures I drew for Lunar New Year. They're not perfect, but I had a lot of fun drawing them and can't wait to post them. Now it's your turn! :D

Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

My favourite tropes/clichés haven't changed much in the last couple of years. Let's see:

Friends to lovers: I just love this dynamic. Two people who have known each other their whole life (or at least a few years) slowly (or suddenly) realising what they feel is not just friendship. Wanting more but being afraid their feelings are not returned, with the risk of ruining their friendship forever. Finally confessing their feelings, being terrified of what might happen, but unable to hide any longer.

Pining/Mutual pining: it could be a variation of friends to lovers, but not necessarily. I just love seeing two characters dance around each other until they can't take it any more. Or one of the two following the other around like a puppy, convinced their feeling will never be returned, but unable to walk away. Just as long as there's a happy ending.

Hurt/Comfort: I love when one character suffers, either physically or emotionally or both, and the other one is right there to comfort them. Cradling them in their arms and whispering that everything will be all right. What's not to love?

Challenge #10

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless!

I don't remember what my first fanfic was (I know it was a Cure slash fic, but who knows in which old computer or external hard drive it is), so I'm going to write about the first (and only) time I drew fanart for a fanzine.

In 2020 I was contacted by someone on Tumblr who was putting together a Good Omens fanzine. I was shocked: I'm not a super talented artist and had never been invited to draw for a zine before. I was also worried I wouldn't be able to draw something good enough for a zine, but the theme was memes, and if there's one thing I'm good at, it's coming up with silly ideas, so I accepted. I think I still had my old laptop and tablet at the time, so it wasn't easy, but in the end I submitted not one, but two pieces!

It was stressful but also fun, and I was very proud of myself for being part of this project.

The zine was called Good Omemes and you can see my two pieces here.

Challenge #8

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

Challenge #9

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I fell a little behind with Snowflake this week, but this delay gave me the perfect opportunity to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone.

I'm going to ramble about my favourite character from Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, but first, have a little drawing by yours truly:

Lupin III is one of the anime I grew up with, I remember coming home from middle school and watching it on TV before doing my homework. Jigen is not just Lupin's sidekick: he's a loyal partner, his best friend, the one person Lupin can always count on to save the day (and get his sorry ass out of the most absurd situations). He's an excellent marksman and can use just about any kind of gun/rifle/weapon, just like he can drive and fix any kind of vehicle (cars, airplanes, helicopters etc.)

He's a chain smoker, a little lazy (he's often portrayed lounging on sofas or on the floor in between jobs or while Lupin prepares for a heist), and he's usually the voice of reason when Lupin's plans get a little out of hand.

He's often described as a misogynist and generally doesn't trust women, but he sometimes shows interest towards a woman. Too bad his potential love interests tend to either die or betray him (hence his distrust towards them).

He's taciturn and kinda grumpy, but he's also fiercely protective and can be very gentle, especially towards people who need help (and children, even if he's always saying he can't stand them). I personally think he's a marshmallow of a man: scorched and bitter on the outside, but soft and sweet on the inside.

As a hardcore Jigen fan, I loved the live-action "Jigen Daisuke" film, but I think my favourite is "Jigen's Gravestone" (both are available on Prime Video). The latter has the added bonus of Jigen "dying" and being gently cradled in Lupin's arms.

I could go on and on, but I think I rambled enough for today. :3

Challenge #6

Share your favourite piece of original canon.

One of my favourite pieces of canon has to be the scene from Lupin Zero in which young Lupin does his first official heist as "Lupin the Third":

https://thecartoongirl.tumblr.com/post/738609681346543616/theevilemster-i-am-going-mental-i-cant-believe

When I watched the scene for the first time, I thought I was reading too much into it, because, come on, it's just a fun, carefree miniseries about 13-year-old Lupin, surely it's just my inner slasher seeing things. But no, they really did it: they made Lupin steal Jigen's heart! I was shocked.

I love that scene because it works from a non-slashy point of view as well. Lupin and Jigen come from very different backgrounds: Lupin is a rich, spoilt kid who lives in a huge mansion with a nanny/bodyguard, has excellent school grades and wants to rebel against his family legacy; we don't know much about Jigen's family, but he doesn't seem to be too well off, his father raised him to be an impressive marksman and often drags him away from school to make him work on various sketchy jobs. But they have one thing in common: they're both extremely lonely and don't have any real friends. That changes in the course of the series, and by the last episode they've built a friendship so strong it's going to last for the rest of their life.

So, no matter how people decide to interpret that scene, it's a pivotal moment for both characters and I don't think I'll ever recover from the fact that it is indeed a piece of canon and I wasn't just hallucinating.

Challenge #5

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

I could write an essay about this, but I'll try to limit myself to a few key points.

First of all, fandom made me realise I can write and draw. Shortly after I discovered fanfiction, I decided I wanted to try my hand at it. It was a challenge at first, as English isn't my native language, but I improved a lot thanks to all the fics I read and wrote. Same with fanart: I've always like drawing (I started drawing my own comics in primary school), but I've never been particularly good. In the last few years, though, I've tried to put some effort into my drawings and, even if I'm not what you'd call a "talented artist", I definitely improved.

Then, thanks to fandom I made friends and built wonderful memories. This is especially true for the Die Ärzte fandom (a German band): I'm still in contact with a few of the people I met online and, even if we live in different countries (or different continents!), we still write to each other and meet up when we happen to be in the same area. Last time it was just a few months ago. I went to so many great concerts and had so many crazy adventures, and none of that would have happened without fandom.

Lastly, fandom is what has been keeping me sane for years. Whenever real life gets too stressful, I know I can count on fandom to distract me for a while. In part it's also the reason why, when I really couldn't go on at my old job any longer, I decided to quit, leave everything behind, and move to Berlin. That was one of the best decisions of my life and exactly what I needed at the time, but I don't think I would've done it without fandom. Of course there's a long story behind that, but I'm not getting into details here.

Anyway, these are just some of the reasons why fandom is so important for me and how it improved (and continues to improve) my life.

Challenge #4

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be to set your own goals! Of course we can all make large or ambitious goals, remember that small and/or short goals are also good!

This is an easy one, as I've already come up with a list of goals for 2025.

- Read more actual books (not just fanfiction)
- Stop wasting so much time on social media
- Publish the Nick/Greg fic that's almost done and finish as many WIPs as I can
- Draw at least one thing each month
- Keep an eye out for a potential new job
- Go back to playing bass

These are all doable, and I've actually already drawn something, which makes me happy and motivates me to go on. The last two items on the list are going to be tricky, but I wanted to include them anyway. Think big, right?

Challenge #3

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

I didn't know what to write at first, then I remembered how I got into the CSI fandom a few years ago. I was going through a very stressful period at work and started watching CSI reruns as a way to relax. (Yeah, I found a TV show about people getting murdered relaxing. It was a stressful period.)

Anyway, at first I just enjoyed watching the show and wasn't interested in the fandom side of it. Then I started thinking Hodges and Wendy were cute together and looked for fics on AO3, but only found a handful. I read a couple of Grissom/Sara fics, but that wasn't really my thing. Then I saw there were A LOT of Nick/Greg fics. And I clearly remember thinking "What? No, they're just friends!" (Oh, sweet summer child...)

But after a while I got desperate for content and decided to give it a try. I mean, I usually love slash, so why not? And all of a sudden, everything just made perfect sense. I kept reading fic after fic, I just couldn't get enough. (Carolinecrane's account on AO3 in particular was a goldmine.)

Still, I was convinced I wouldn't create anything in the CSI fandom, I would simply limit myself to reading fics, and that would be it. Well, 41 fics, a few WIPs and some fanart pieces later, I can say without fear of contradiction I definitely changed my mind about the Nick/Greg ship and my involvement in the fandom.

Challenge #2
In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story.

I think I've already written about this, but it's always nice to take a stroll down memory lane.

I stumbled upon fandom (more specifically fanfiction) in my first year of university. I was browsing through random fansites about The Cure, when I found a site that hosted "slash". I had never heard about it before and wanted to know more, so I clicked on the link... And my life has never been the same. I'm not even exaggerating: I found dozens of websites about fanfiction, joined mailing lists, met people from all over the world who shared the same passion for writing. After a while, I started writing too. Of course my first fics were awful (and not just because English isn't my native language), but I improved over time. I also started drawing again and realised I still loved it, even if I wasn't as talented as I would've liked.

I've been in many fandoms since then, and there were years when I wasn't active at all, I was merely reading fics or looking at fanart, but I really couldn't imagine how my life would have been had I decided not to click on that fateful link.

Try something new.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

This isn't something I'm doing for the Snowflake Challenge, but I've never done it before, so I suppose it counts: I'm trying my hand at podficcing! When I was a teenager my dream was to become a voice actor, which sadly never happened, but last summer I realised I could try turning one of my fics into a podfic. I started with a drabble, but I wasn't 100% satisfied with the result, so I didn't post it. I haven't worked on this little project lately, as I was focusing on the Nick/Greg Advent Calendar and then was attacked by other fanfic ideas, but I want to try again. Practice makes perfect, right?

And talking about fanfic ideas, I'm currently writing a Lupin/Jigen fanfic. The fandom itself (Lupin III) isn't new to me, but the pairing is, so I might as well mention it.

I can never choose when I have to put together rec lists. This time I decided to focus on fanart: I found most of these recently, which doesn't necessarily mean they are all new, but most were posted in the last few months.

Lupin III

Adorable Lupin/Jigen fanart that made my heart melt, by applthief on Tumblr. I go "Aww" every time I look at it.

Winter Lupin art: Trans-Siberian Railway, by dasha-ko on Tumblr. An amazing ensemble illustration, I love the composition and the technique.

Sleeping Jigen, by yufy01 on Tumblr. I MEAN.

Good Omens

Amazing snake!Crowley fanart, by smoosie on Tumblr. The colours are just fantastic.

Get in loser, by unicornempire on Tumblr. One of my all-time favourite Goom Omens illustrations.

Late night meeting, by martina_a_duck on Instagram. Monk!Aziraphale and Crowley meet one night in the Middle Ages for some... extra-curricular activities. Not explicit, but highly suggestive.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

A break while working, by Peanut_Booi on AO3. Nick and Greg fall asleep in the lab.

Pure Heaven, by Peanut_Booi on AO3. Nick/Greg fanart. Not explicit, but... intense.

Challenge #12

Tell Us about a Personal Win.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

I'll take this literally and write about the Christmas raffle I won last December! There's a "tradition" in Italy: before Christmas (and sometimes before Easter) shops will have a raffle. You choose one or more numbers between 1 and 90 and pay a small sum for each number (usually around €5). The raffle is linked to one of the lotto draws of the week before Christmas and prizes are stuff like hampers full of Christmas products, bottles of wine, or something else, depending on the shop organising the raffle.

In my family, my dad's usually the lucky one: he won various Christmas hampers and Easter chocolate eggs over the years, but last year it was my turn! A couple of days before Christmas I had coffee with my colleagues at the usual coffee place near our office, and I saw they had a Christmas raffle. First prize was 10 free lunches, second prize was 10 free aperitivi, third prize was 10 free breakfasts. I saw my lucky number was still available and decided to invest €5 on it. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision and guess what: I won the first prize! :D

I already claimed the first of my free lunches (and brought a colleague with me, because this kind of luck should be shared), and it was a delicious meal. I'm looking forward to more yummy lunches in the next weeks. :)

I knew this challenge was coming, but I wasn't prepared, as I've been busy in the last few days. But I really wanted to create something and, more specifically, to draw something. Even more specifically, I wanted to draw Jigen, so here's a super quick and rough sketch I drew today at work. I have to admit I didn't know hot to respond to today's challenge at first, then I got a sudden idea. I'm not a cosplayer (I dressed up as some of my favourite characters for Halloween a few times, but I'm not sure it really counts as cosplay), but there are some characters I'd love to cosplay, if I had the time, energy, dedication and capability to put together the outfits. That's probably never gonna happen, but nothing's stopping me from talking about it.

So, here I bring you...

Challenge #9

Rec Us Your Newest Thing.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

My newest thing is actually an old thing: Lupin III, which is one of my favourite anime, I started watching it when I was in middle school. I've been very into it lately, ever since watching the Jigen Disuke film in December, then I finally watched Lupin Zero and... Well. Let's just say I've never really been into Lupin/Jigen, but now I've changed my mind. Jigen has always been my favourite character, but in the past I leaned more towards Jigen/Goemon, I even wrote a fic years and years ago (both in English and Italian, it was one of the very few fics I wrote in Italian), but after watching Lupin Zero, how can you not ship Lupin and Jigen, even just a little bit? And no, I'm not going to add anything more specific, because I don't want to spoil anything. Just that it's set in the '60s, when both Lupin and Jigen are middle school students, and I found it very enjoyable. Especially a certain scene, which I still can't believe actually happened.

Now I'm slowly working my way through all the films and episodes I haven't watched yet: I started with "Jigen's Gravestone", because of course I would, and I really liked the style, it's very similar to the original Monkey Punch's drawings.

If you like the Lupin III universe but, like me, got distracted in the last few years and missed the latest additions, you can find most of the series and films on Amazon Prime. I could only find the Jigen Daisuke film in the original Japanese version with subtitles, but it wasn't a problem for me. Hopefully it won't be a problem for you either. :)

Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying).

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

We're only halfway through January and I already have 4 new WIPs, 2 CSI and 2 Lupin III.

CSI

  • A fluffy Nick/Greg ficlet inspired by this prompt.

  • A Nick/Greg fic in which Nick comes out to Warrick.

Lupin III

  • A Jigen-centric future fic inspired by the Jigen Daisuke film (apparently there are no fics related to that film on AO3? How is that possible?)

  • A smutty Lupin/Jigen fic inspired by Jigen's Gravestone.

And of course there's still that Nick/Greg fic I've been working on for the last couple of years, one of my goals for 2024 is to finally finish it.

As for fanart, I haven't started working on my Lunar New Year illustration yet, but I've already looked up references. Like the last two years, it will be silly and feature Greg Sanders from CSI.

So, yeah, I have quite a lot going on at the moment. Let's see what I'll actually finish...

I feel a little like I'm cheating, but the websites I find most useful are still the ones I listed last year and the previous year, which I use quite often.

Forever Dreaming Transcripts

I use this site whenever I need a quote from a show. Some scripts are very precise, complete with action descriptions, others are more basic and only have the actors' lines and nothing else, but it's still extremely useful.

Fandom.com

I don't know how many fandoms are listed, but for those that are there there's a lot of information: plots, character descriptions, trivia, lists of episodes divided by season. I found it very useful when I had just got into the CSI fandom and needed what long-time fans would probably consider "common knowledge".

Panchostokes on Tumblr

She hasn't been very active lately, but she makes amazing CSI animated GIFs, as well as writing Nick-centric fanfics.

Cambridge Dictionary

When in doubt, I check the Cambridge dictionary! I also find it very useful to compare the British and American pronunciation of the same words.

Leo Dictionaries

A multilingual German dictionary.

And last but not least:

Archive of Our Own

Because we would all be lost without it. ♥
