I should really finish editing that Nick/Greg fic, but I got an idea for a Lupin/Jigen ficlet that I just had to write. I don't even know where I got the idea from, but who cares. Inspiration is inspiration, right?

Title: Mon cœur
Fandom: Lupin III
Pairing: Lupin/Jigen
Rating: Teen/PG-13
Summary: Jigen doesn't like a certain term of endearment

"Mon cœur..." Lupin murmured, pressing himself against Jigen's back and placing a kiss on the gunman's naked shoulder.

Jigen immediately tensed up.

"Don't."

I'm really on a roll art-wise lately. Last year, I found out about Lupin Week on Tumblr when the whole thing was already over. Well, not this year! Here's a quick, silly drawing inspired by Lupin's hate towards octopus (and my love for takoyaki).

Challenge #9

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I fell a little behind with Snowflake this week, but this delay gave me the perfect opportunity to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone.

I'm going to ramble about my favourite character from Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, but first, have a little drawing by yours truly:

Lupin III is one of the anime I grew up with, I remember coming home from middle school and watching it on TV before doing my homework. Jigen is not just Lupin's sidekick: he's a loyal partner, his best friend, the one person Lupin can always count on to save the day (and get his sorry ass out of the most absurd situations). He's an excellent marksman and can use just about any kind of gun/rifle/weapon, just like he can drive and fix any kind of vehicle (cars, airplanes, helicopters etc.)

He's a chain smoker, a little lazy (he's often portrayed lounging on sofas or on the floor in between jobs or while Lupin prepares for a heist), and he's usually the voice of reason when Lupin's plans get a little out of hand.

He's often described as a misogynist and generally doesn't trust women, but he sometimes shows interest towards a woman. Too bad his potential love interests tend to either die or betray him (hence his distrust towards them).

He's taciturn and kinda grumpy, but he's also fiercely protective and can be very gentle, especially towards people who need help (and children, even if he's always saying he can't stand them). I personally think he's a marshmallow of a man: scorched and bitter on the outside, but soft and sweet on the inside.

As a hardcore Jigen fan, I loved the live-action "Jigen Daisuke" film, but I think my favourite is "Jigen's Gravestone" (both are available on Prime Video). The latter has the added bonus of Jigen "dying" and being gently cradled in Lupin's arms.

I could go on and on, but I think I rambled enough for today. :3

Challenge #6

Share your favourite piece of original canon.

One of my favourite pieces of canon has to be the scene from Lupin Zero in which young Lupin does his first official heist as "Lupin the Third":

https://thecartoongirl.tumblr.com/post/738609681346543616/theevilemster-i-am-going-mental-i-cant-believe

When I watched the scene for the first time, I thought I was reading too much into it, because, come on, it's just a fun, carefree miniseries about 13-year-old Lupin, surely it's just my inner slasher seeing things. But no, they really did it: they made Lupin steal Jigen's heart! I was shocked.

I love that scene because it works from a non-slashy point of view as well. Lupin and Jigen come from very different backgrounds: Lupin is a rich, spoilt kid who lives in a huge mansion with a nanny/bodyguard, has excellent school grades and wants to rebel against his family legacy; we don't know much about Jigen's family, but he doesn't seem to be too well off, his father raised him to be an impressive marksman and often drags him away from school to make him work on various sketchy jobs. But they have one thing in common: they're both extremely lonely and don't have any real friends. That changes in the course of the series, and by the last episode they've built a friendship so strong it's going to last for the rest of their life.

So, no matter how people decide to interpret that scene, it's a pivotal moment for both characters and I don't think I'll ever recover from the fact that it is indeed a piece of canon and I wasn't just hallucinating.

I should probably write a recap of my trip to Tuscany, but for the moment have a quick Jigen sketch I did while I was in Lucca.

There was a pub near my B&B where each table had some pens, you could draw something on the paper table mat and the owners would then hang them on the walls (there were drawings everywhere), so I decided to doodle something too. Someone had already drawn Lupin, so I had to draw Jigen. I mean, you can't separate those two...

I've finally gone back to working on a Nick/Greg fic I started a long time ago but never finished. It still needs work, but I like what I have so far. I want it to be a slow burn kinda fic, which is ridiculous, given my tendency to write almost exclusively ficlets and short stories, but I'm going to try anyway. As I was writing, I remembered there was another ficlet I started in response to a hurt/comfort prompt some time ago that I still need to finish. I think the fic has taken a slightly different direction from the original prompt, I might have to change a thing or two.

It feels good being back to writing Nick/Greg, it's become such a comfort pairing for me.

I also found some amazing Lupin/Jigen fanart on Twitter (or X, or whatever it's called these days, I never use it any more). The account hasn't been updated in a while, but there are a lot of great pics. A lot of them are NSFW, with some humour and angst thrown into the mix, so be careful when you click the link:

I started writing this fic a while back, I think I got the idea shortly after watching "Jigen's Gravestone", but then work got crazy and I was always too tired to finish it. Work is still crazy, but I finally found the time (and energy) to finish it. So here it is, my first smutty Lupin/Jigen fic. It feels kinda weird writing smut about this pairing after being in the fandom for such a long time (I literally grew up with these characters), but what can I say, I've been a little obsessed lately...

Title: Not friends
Fandom: Lupin III
Pairing: Lupin/Jigen
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Summary: Lupin and Jigen take a little holiday after the events of "Jigen's Gravestone".

...

"Let's take a holiday," Lupin suggested as he threw the cigarette butt away and slid back behind the wheel of the dilapidated car. The sun had dipped below the horizon, and East Doroa was just a dark silhouette against the purple sky, dozens of tiny lights glittering in the twilight. "Somewhere warm and quiet, far away from secret dossiers and international intrigues. We both need a break after the week we've had."

What he didn't say out loud was that he wanted them to stick together so he could keep an eye on Jigen and his wound, but the gunman read right through him. He told the thief in no uncertain terms he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself and didn't need a babysitter, but Lupin wouldn't budge. Jigen knew trying to argue with him was a lost cause, so he just sighed and reluctantly agreed to go along.

Two days later, they were on a ferry boat headed towards a small Mediterranean island whose name Jigen had never heard before.

I've wanted to draw a Jigen version of the hairstyle meme for a while but never had the time, then last Sunday I finally sat down and did it. It's just a bunch of pencil drawings, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out. And, to be perfectly honest, I was simply looking for an excuse to draw a lot of different Jigens.

I've been working on a smutty Lupin/Jigen fanfic inspired by "Jigen's Gravestone" for a while. It's almost done, but then the other day I got an idea for a ficlet inspired by "Lupin Zero" and I just had to write it. Because I still haven't recovered from that scene, and I don't know if I ever will.

Title: The greatest constant
Fandom: Lupin III
Pairing: Lupin/Jigen (or Lupin & Jigen)
Rating: G
Summary: School uniforms make Lupin feel nostalgic.
A/N: Spoilers for "Lupin Zero". Lupin and Jigen's relationship here can be read as romantic or platonic, I left it intentionally vague.

...

"Shouldn't we leave the country? Or move to another city at least?" Jigen asks as he lights up the umpteenth cigarette of the day. "It's not wise staying so long after all the ruckus you caused for that old piece of wood."

"First of all, that was an original woodblock from the Edo period, used to print one of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and it's worth millions of yen," Lupin replies, sounding mildly offended.

"Whatever," Jigen grunts. "Then why did you gift it to Goemon if it's so precious?"

Work is killing me and I don't know when I'll have the time and mental energy to clean this up, so have the usual pencil sketch for now. I want to experiment with dynamic poses, as my drawings are always very stiff, and Goemon is the perfect subject for that. I'm especially pleased with how his hands turned out, which is something I always struggle with. (Yes, I used my own hands as reference, that's not cheating, right?)

If you had told me just two months ago that my first finished fic of 2024 would be a gen Lupin III fic, I wouldn't have believed you. Lupin III is one of my all-time favourite anime and I've been in the fandom for years, I have figurines and T-shirts, I even wrote a Jigen/Goemon fanfic once, but that was more than 20 (!!!) years ago. But then I watched the Jigen Daisuke live-action film and Lupin Zero and I've been a little obsessed.

Anyway, here's the fic. I'm a little nervous about it, but I've had this idea stuck in my head pretty much ever since watching the film, and I really wanted to write it.

Title: A promise is a promise
Fandom: Lupin III
Pairing: -
Rating: G (maybe PG for some swearing)
Summary: Jigen receives a letter and goes back to a place he hasn't been to in more than 10 years.
A/N: Future fic set about 10 years after the events of the "Jigen Daisuke" live-action film.

The room was cold and dark, the only source of light coming from a rickety floor lamp standing in a corner. Jigen stood up from the old sofa and walked to the window, a letter held loosely in one hand. He gazed out, studying the heavy grey clouds that had been steadily gathering for the last hour. Suddenly, a flash of lightning slashed the sky, illuminating the desolate countryside that surrounded the abandoned villa for a fraction of a second. Thunder rumbled in the distance, and the first raindrops started to fall.

He slipped the letter into his pocket and took out a crumpled packet of cigarettes and a lighter. He frowned as he realized there was only one cigarette left. He lit it up and threw the empty packet in the general direction of the table, then took a long drag and exhaled slowly.

He needed to talk to Lupin.

This has been a very difficult week. But, once again, fandom came to my rescue: I drew some fanart (finished one drawing, working on another one), wrote a little and, above all, I found a Jigen-centric fanfic set after the events of the Jigen Daisuke live-action film that was PERFECT. So I'm going to rec it, because it absolutely deserves to be read. It won't make much sense if you haven't watched the film, but it's really amazing and exactly what I needed.

"When you're older, I'll make you sukiyaki again."
Jigen comes back to Deigyo-gai. Oto is growing up fast, and he's still not getting used to this warm feeling in his chest.

Basically, it's about Jigen being an improbable father figure and trying to wrap his head around it. It's cute and adorable, but still perfectly in character, and some bits literally made me laugh out loud.

I knew this challenge was coming, but I wasn't prepared, as I've been busy in the last few days. But I really wanted to create something and, more specifically, to draw something. Even more specifically, I wanted to draw Jigen, so here's a super quick and rough sketch I drew today at work. Rec Us Your Newest Thing.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

My newest thing is actually an old thing: Lupin III, which is one of my favourite anime, I started watching it when I was in middle school. I've been very into it lately, ever since watching the Jigen Disuke film in December, then I finally watched Lupin Zero and... Well. Let's just say I've never really been into Lupin/Jigen, but now I've changed my mind. Jigen has always been my favourite character, but in the past I leaned more towards Jigen/Goemon, I even wrote a fic years and years ago (both in English and Italian, it was one of the very few fics I wrote in Italian), but after watching Lupin Zero, how can you not ship Lupin and Jigen, even just a little bit? And no, I'm not going to add anything more specific, because I don't want to spoil anything. Just that it's set in the '60s, when both Lupin and Jigen are middle school students, and I found it very enjoyable. Especially a certain scene, which I still can't believe actually happened.

Now I'm slowly working my way through all the films and episodes I haven't watched yet: I started with "Jigen's Gravestone", because of course I would, and I really liked the style, it's very similar to the original Monkey Punch's drawings.

If you like the Lupin III universe but, like me, got distracted in the last few years and missed the latest additions, you can find most of the series and films on Amazon Prime. I could only find the Jigen Daisuke film in the original Japanese version with subtitles, but it wasn't a problem for me. Hopefully it won't be a problem for you either. :)

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying).

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

We're only halfway through January and I already have 4 new WIPs, 2 CSI and 2 Lupin III.

CSI

  • A fluffy Nick/Greg ficlet inspired by this prompt.

  • A Nick/Greg fic in which Nick comes out to Warrick.

Lupin III

  • A Jigen-centric future fic inspired by the Jigen Daisuke film (apparently there are no fics related to that film on AO3? How is that possible?)

  • A smutty Lupin/Jigen fic inspired by Jigen's Gravestone.

And of course there's still that Nick/Greg fic I've been working on for the last couple of years, one of my goals for 2024 is to finally finish it.

As for fanart, I haven't started working on my Lunar New Year illustration yet, but I've already looked up references. Like the last two years, it will be silly and feature Greg Sanders from CSI.

So, yeah, I have quite a lot going on at the moment. Let's see what I'll actually finish...
