gothikmaus: (Jigen)
This has been a very difficult week. But, once again, fandom came to my rescue: I drew some fanart (finished one drawing, working on another one), wrote a little and, above all, I found a Jigen-centric fanfic set after the events of the Jigen Daisuke live-action film that was PERFECT. So I'm going to rec it, because it absolutely deserves to be read. It won't make much sense if you haven't watched the film, but it's really amazing and exactly what I needed.

Sukiyaki - by morporkian_hobbit (Rated G)

"When you're older, I'll make you sukiyaki again."
Jigen comes back to Deigyo-gai. Oto is growing up fast, and he's still not getting used to this warm feeling in his chest.

Basically, it's about Jigen being an improbable father figure and trying to wrap his head around it. It's cute and adorable, but still perfectly in character, and some bits literally made me laugh out loud.

Challenge #13

Make a rec list of fanworks!

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of metallic snowflake. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31.

I can never choose when I have to put together rec lists. This time I decided to focus on fanart: I found most of these recently, which doesn't necessarily mean they are all new, but most were posted in the last few months.

Lupin III

Adorable Lupin/Jigen fanart that made my heart melt, by applthief on Tumblr. I go "Aww" every time I look at it.

Winter Lupin art: Trans-Siberian Railway, by dasha-ko on Tumblr. An amazing ensemble illustration, I love the composition and the technique.

Sleeping Jigen, by yufy01 on Tumblr. I MEAN.

Good Omens

Amazing snake!Crowley fanart, by smoosie on Tumblr. The colours are just fantastic.

Get in loser, by unicornempire on Tumblr. One of my all-time favourite Goom Omens illustrations.

Late night meeting, by martina_a_duck on Instagram. Monk!Aziraphale and Crowley meet one night in the Middle Ages for some... extra-curricular activities. Not explicit, but highly suggestive.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

A break while working, by Peanut_Booi on AO3. Nick and Greg fall asleep in the lab.

Pure Heaven, by Peanut_Booi on AO3. Nick/Greg fanart. Not explicit, but... intense.

Eric Szmanda fanart, by Bullethead on DeviantArt. I still can't believe this is a painting and not a photo!

Three fanworks, huh? How about I rec three fanfics and three pieces of fanart? :)

FANFICTION

Eyes for Stars by SunriseinSpace
Fandom: CSI x His Dark Materials
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Rating: PG
Summary: If the department starts gossiping about Greg's near-constant frown at his daemon, at least they're not talking about Greg's crush on Nick.

I admit I'm not familiar with "His Dark Materials" (it's on my way too long to-read list), but I was curious and gave it a try. And I don't regret it! It's very well written, humorous and intense. I loved it!

Remember December by Nekosmuse
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Some things should not be taken for granted.

I haven't read this story in a long time, but as soon as I read the summary, I remembered it. It was so painful to read, but luckily there's a happy ending.

Acts of Love by Green
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Seven first times.

I really like how this story is written, starting at the end and going backwards, showing how the relationship between Nick and Greg evolved through Nick's point of view.

FANART

Pure Heaven by Peanut_Booi
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Rating: PG-13

I love Peanut_Booi's drawings, they're always super sweet. You can feel the love in the way the characters look at each other, smiling and blushing. And that hands pic conveys so much emotion without actually showing anything explicit.

Arriving at the Crime Scene by JackyMedan
Fandom: CSI
Character: Greg Sanders
Rating: G

One of the coolest ideas I've ever seen. Traditional art, yet interactive. Amazing.

The queen is displeased. by Gingerhaole
Fandom: Good Omens
Character: Crowley
Rating: G

Gingerhaole is one of my favourite artists, I love her style. This piece is a redraw of a classic painting and it just takes my breath away: the colours, the intense gaze, all the details. I love it.

I actually did this a few days ago: I found a new Nick/Greg fic on AO3, but I didn't have time to read it right away. The Nick/Greg fandom is very quiet these days, but I was surprised at how few hits and kudos that story was getting. Sure, that might be because of the tags, but still. Then I finally started reading it, and I couldn't understand why the story was getting basically no feedback: I literally couldn't stop reading, I stayed up way too late because I just had to finish it. So on top of leaving kudos, I also left comments on 3 of the 5 chapters.

This is the story. Please be warned that there are non-con elements.

Challenge # 10

In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

How can I choose only one?! Well, for sentimentality's sake, I'll say the Vegas Lights series by Midna_Ronoa on AO3, because it's one of the first works I've read in the CSI fandom and I would love to read more instalments of it.

And I'll add another one. I'm currently reading The Fourth Horseman by The_She_Devil, a Nick/Greg fic set in the middle of a pandemic. The eerie thing is that this story was written well before the outbreak of COVID, but the evolution of the pandemic in the first few chapters is really quite similar to what actually happened, and the "strategies" used to prevent the spread of the disease are the same ones that have been put in place in the last two years: from generic suggestions to wear masks and wash hands, to quarantine for infected people and night curfew. Of course the story is much more dystopic than what happened in the real world, but all the similarities really hit me. I'm almost halfway through it, and I really, really hope there will be a happy ending, because Nick and Greg are suffering so much in this. 😭

Please, check the tags before reading the second fic. I put off reading it until two days ago because of the tags, but I must admit it's really well written. I just hope the ending won't be too tragic. 😭

EDIT: And another one, because I really needed something happy and fluffy after thinking of that second story: i tell myself i'm not in love (but one more time is not enough) . This is also one of the first Nick/Greg fics I've read, it's a little angsty at the beginning, but just so, so sweet. And there's a bit that has stuck with me ever since I read it for the first time:

"No one will ever be as cute as we were, Nicky."

What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic.

Challenge #9

In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

2020 was a very productive year for me fandom-wise, so I have a few things to choose from.

1) The two fanart pieces I drew for the Good Omemes fanzine: link to Instagram - link to Tumblr

I had never been part of a fanzine before and, even if they're far from perfect, I'm still quite proud of these two pieces.

2) The drawings I did for the Good Omens Celebration Month: link to Instagram - link to Tumblr - link to Twitter
(The Tumblr and Twitter links are easier to browse, the Instagram one is a link to the first drawing, the other drawings were posted in the following days, one each day.)

There are drawings I like more than others, but I'm very proud of myself for actually drawing all 30 prompts (+1).

3) The 24 ficlets I wrote for my own Good Omens Advent Calendar: So this is Christmas (on AO3, rated G)

I was looking for Advent Calendar prompts, but couldn't find anything, so I decided to make my own. It's "only" a collection of stand-alone ficlets, but it's still more than 5,000 words written in less than a month, which for me is a huge achievement.

Aaand, for something completely different...

4) "Ai Shite Knight" fanart: link to Instagram - link to Tumblr

This is probably extremely niche (unless you were a little girl in Italy in the '80s, then you would recognise him right away), and it was a bit of an experiment, but I had so much fun drawing it that I decided to include it in the list.

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It took me forever to choose, and I'm sure I could add dozens of works, but if I wait any longer I'll just keep adding links to the list, so here they are.

1) The Small Omens AU by Alegra Figeroid on Instagram. Each painting is so detailled and full of joy, I just don't know which one to choose. I'd say this one and this one are among my favourites, but they're all adorable!

2) The breathtaking paintings by Elizabeth W on Instagram. If I had to choose just one I'd choose this Aziraphale and Crowley piece, but they're all stunning.

3) This beautiful Crowley painting by Lilian Rieke on Instagram. The colours are amazing, it looks like it's painted on a real canvas. And it's so full of emotions.

4) This Japan-themed Good Omens painting by Martina H on Instagram. I love everything Martina paints, but this has both Good Omens AND Japan, so I couldn't resist!

5) This fantastic Good Omens piece by SB Jung on Instagram. This artist's style is so unique, I love how they use colours.

6) This Good Omens collaboration by Gingerhaole and Umulata on Instagram. They're two of my favourite artists and I just love this piece.

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So many beautiful stories and fanart pieces, how am I supposed to choose?

I'll start with three Good Omens fanart pieces by Gingerhaole:

• Help your husband get ahead - Collab with ThunderheadFred
https://www.instagram.com/p/B2gGLMllIri/

• Pure light - NSFW - Collab with Emmett Lee
https://www.instagram.com/p/B5nzDIcla79NY6zIXoBEFlImr1a3sdyXykDFfY0/ (private account)

• Take care - Slightly NSFW, more suggestive than anything

And two Good Omens fanfics, both Christmas-themed:

Challenge # 7

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises* of Yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Self-promotion is always a bit difficult, but I'll try. So, what do I do? I write fanfiction and draw fanart. I don't write long, epic stories and tend to focus on dialogue. I've been told I can get characters' voices right, and that's one of the biggest compliments for me.

My latest fanfic is "Deadly", a Good Omens vignette collection based on the Seven Deadly Sins, which I wish had got a little more visibility. I mean, there's even a mention of Dante Alighieri in it! (Yes, I can be a real nerd when I want to.)

Tiny preview:

Aziraphale let out an annoyed sigh. "Really, Crowley, it's bad enough when you sleep, which, for the umpteenth time, you don't need to. But now you're just... Doing nothing. On my sofa."

"The cool kids call it "chilling" these days."

"Well, you're not a kid and, let me assure you, you're not cool either."

As for fanart, I need to be honest and admit I'm neither talented nor patient enough for elaborate, detailed paintings, so I usually draw cartoonish pictures and silly comics.

Two examples:

Good Omens Boxing Day comic (2019)

Posted on Tumblr, Instagram and AO3

Mycroft/Lestrade vignette (2014)

Posted on Tumblr

If anyone is interested in seeing more, my most recent fics are all on AO3, while my older ones can be found on my website. I post my fanart on Tumblr and, more recently, on Instagram. I have a fanart gallery as well, but it's terribly outdated. I really should be a little more organised on the fanart front...

Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

I don't have much to ask:

1) Well-written Mystrade fics, possibly with a little angst, some UST and a happy ending. They don't necessarily have to be explicit (though I love well-written smut!), but good kissing scenes are always a plus. I know there are a lot of excellent fics out there, and I've read quite a few, but if someone could point out some new(ish) stories, I'd be really grateful.

2) Mystrade fanart. Paintings, comics, anything really. I just love those two.

3) Snape/Lily fics and/or fanart. Because I just love awkward, teen!Snape and fierce, teen!Lily. Stories and fanart where they are still friends, showing their life at Hogwarts or during summer breaks or the two of them going on with their lives after the events in "Snape's worst memory", but thinking back of their old friendship every now and then.

Day 8

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1) Of torches and graveyards (Mystrade, PG-13) - This fic took me a very long time to finish: I originally started it just after "The Abominable Bride", then lost inspiration and abandoned it. I picked it up again after Season 4, but still didn't finish it until last year. It's not exactly like I had originally planned, but I must admit I'm quite satisfied with how it turned out.

2) A reasonable solution (Molly/Lestrade, PG13) - This is not a pairing I usually write or read, but I got this idea and just had to write it. Besides, even if my main ship is Mystrade these days, I have to admit Greg and Molly look damn cute together.

3) The Dead Lovers fanart - A Christmas sketch and a Photoshop New Year version, inspired by a concert I saw last December. The "recurring theme" throughout the show was Lula's love for "vino rosso" (red wine), so I used it for these two silly drawings.

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As I'm not very active in fandom these days and tend to read only a few trusted authors and a few pairings, I didn't know what to rec at first, so I focused on one of my favourite authors on AO3 and a DW community I've recently rediscovered.

A Christmas Carol by Mottlemoth (BBC Sherlock)
I found this fanfic by chance at the end of 2017 and it was love at first sight. A Mystrade version of a Christmas classic, with a lot of angst and a happy ending. Actually, the ending is a bit too much for me, but it's a Christmas story, so I'm willing to overlook the excessive sweetness.

Aziraphale and Crowley fanart by ? (Good Omens)
A lovely piece of fanart posted in the [community profile] go_exchange community and based on the following prompts: human!Crowley accidentally summoning an angel; Crowley experimenting with looks and clothes; Crowley being smaller than Aziraphale; wings. I like the style, the expressions on Aziraphale and Crowley's faces, the soft colours. I'm looking forward to finding out who the author is.

Madame Tracy, Aziraphale and Crowley, Hastur, Ligur, and Lurky fanart by ? (Good Omens)
Three brilliant paintings of Madame Tracy, Aziraphale and Crowley, Hastur, Ligur, and Lurky. The style is so rich and detailed, I could stare at these pictures all day! Like for the previous rec, I can't wait to find out who the secret artist is, he/she is incredibly talented!
gothikmaus: (Berlin)
I'm still doing the Snowflake Challenge, it's just taking me a while to keep up.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

To friendship - "Richy Guitar" fanfic (rated R)

I mentioned this fic last time I took part in the challenge as well, but I can't help it, it's one the fics I'm fondest of, even if I wrote it *GASP* 10 years ago! "Richy Guitar" is an obscure German film from the '80s, probably only known by fans of German band Die Ärzte, who play the main characters. I have a thing for stories where one of the characters is pining after the other, who is completely oblivious. In this fic there's that, plus some humour, some angst, a bit of smut and, of course, a happy ending. Because I'm a total sap.

I should probably put this on AO3, so it would be easier to find, but the fact that this fic and its sequels would be the only works in that non-existing fandom is quite intimidating...

England would fall - "BBC Sherlock" fanfic (rated PG)

Talking about a character pining after the other, here's a Mystrade ficlet in which Mycroft's mighty self-control slips for a moment, allowing Greg to catch a glimpse of something. And because Greg Lestrade is not stupid, no matter what the Holmes brothers might say, he decides to do something about it.

Mystrade comic - "BBC Sherlock" comic (rated G)

A silly comic strip I drew for a friend's Christmas card. She wanted "something filthy involving Mycroft", and of course my brain had to come up with that.

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It took me a while, as I haven't been active in any fandom in the last few months and I couldn't think of anything at first, but then I went searching among links and bookmarks and folders, and of course I found too many things. I wanted to choose different formats and different fandoms and I'm sure I could go on searching the whole night and still find gems I'd like to share, but I need to go to sleep, so here are my three fanworks du jour.

The Shortest Distance Between Two Points by Ameonna and Melospiza
A Mystrade fanfic set in the Harry Potter universe. I hadn't read anything Potter-related for ages, but when I found this fanfic, I knew I had to read it.

Experiments are Fun fanart by Sash-Kash
One of the first pieces of Sherlock fanart I found just after Series 1, it's still one of my favourites (and makes me laugh every time).

Daisuke Jigen from Lupin III fanart by ffSade
Jigen is one of my favourite manga characters and I simply love this fanart.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

1) "Telephone" (Sherlock fanvid)

I can't for the life of me remember where I found this video, I thought it was in the [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc LJ comm, but I can't track down the entry. Anyway, I watched it so many times last year, it's brilliant.

2) Steve/Danny fanart (NOT SAFE FOR WORK)
I love everything about this drawing: the style, the hotness, the intensity. I could stare at it for hours.

3) Bang, Bang (Hawaii Five-0 fanart tumblr account)
I love this artist's style.

http://inabafromj.tumblr.com

I have been trying to think of fics to rec, but I usually end up reading stories that have already been recced by someone else and are quite well-known. So I decided to go for unusual pairings.

4) 'Ekahi, 'Elua, 'Ekolu (Steve/Danny/Catherine)
I love Catherine in the show and I love her in this, she knows Steve so well and can clearly see what's going on between him and Danny even if those two seem to be completely oblivious.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/197808

5) Wild Honey (Steve/Danny het)
Genderswap where Danny is a woman but still so Danny you barely notice the difference.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/154450

6) Some kind of Freaky Friday (Steve/Danny het)
Genderswap where Steve is turned into a woman. I love the dynamics between the two and the fact that Steve is still very much himself even as a woman.

gothikmaus: (Japan)
Happy New Year, flist! For the first time in years I didn't celebrate last night. I was supposed to go to a friend's place, but at the last moment it seemed it was only going to be me, my friend V and her boyfriend (the "party" as at their place) and maybe D and her boyfriend. And you know what? I did not want to start the new year surrounded by happy couples being lovey-dovey. So I stayed home.

Anyway. I'll try to give the "Fandom Snowflake Challenge" a go. For the first day I chose four different fandoms and three different kinds of fanworks: fanfiction, fanart and webcomics. I think what "defines" me as a creator is that I like doing a little bit of everything: writing, drawing, making up silly comic strips.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Drop a link to your post in the comments.

1) To friendship - The art of living together (Aka the never-ending Richy/Igor saga)
This is a series I wrote between 2008 and 2009. The fandom is so small and obscure I'm not even sure you can call it a fandom at all: it's based on a German film from the '80s, "Richy Guitar". It's a kitschy, funny little film, definitely not a masterpiece, and people only remember it because the main characters were played by Farin and Bela from Die Ärzte, a rock band that has become one of the most popular acts in Germany. I'm a big fan of the band and I love the '80s, so of course I watched the film. And since I already wrote RPS about them, writing fics about their film versions was the next step.

To friendship: Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5
The art of living together: #1 - #2 - #3 - #4 - #5 - #6 - #7 - #8

2) Zu viel Alkohol Backstage (A Bela B. y Los Helmstedt webcomic)
A webcomic I drew between 2007 and 2010. It's dedicated to Bela B. y Los Helmstedt, the solo project of Bela B, drummer of Die Ärzte. It all started with a single sketch that I sent to one of the musicians on MySpace. He liked it, showed it to everyone else and I officially became "The cartoon girl".

www.doitcomics.net/loshelmstedt

3) All I ever wanted - All I ever needed (Hawaii Five-0 fanfiction)
Two Hawaii Five-0 ficlets, the former from Steve's PoV and the latter from Danny's. This is pretty much my headcanon.

gothikmaus: (Sherlock/John)
I pretty much never rec fics, but the following story combines my two current fandoms and I wanted to spread the love.

Just a little warning: even reading the summary will totally spoil you for the end of Season 1 of Hawaii Five-0.

Title: The long wait
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sirona_gs
Fandom(s): Sherlock, Hawaii Five-0
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Harry/Clara, Danny/Rachel, implied past (and future) Steve/Danny
Word count: ~2,000
Rating: PG
Summary: Sherlock gets dragged by John to Harry and Clara's ultrasound appointment. Expecting to be bored out of his mind, he falls to his usual hobby of detection. His attention is captured by a reconciled couple who are expecting their second child, but it's not hard to work out that things between them are not going all that swimmingly.
