All right, I'm officially addicted to True Blood. If I start to analyse it too much, I see the plot is just like any other vampire story (vampire meets mortal girl, they fall in love blahblahblah), but I love it anyway.

Also, you American people on my flist: is Louisiana really like that? I mean, a friend of mine told me once that she met an American girl from NYC and, somehow, they ended up talking about Britney Spears, of all things. And the American girl said something along the lines of "Oh, what did you expect from her, she's from Louisiana." I don't know much about this kind of stereotypes regarding various US states, but I'm quite interested, could anyone please enlighten me? Or point out a site or something where I could read more on the subject? Thanks.

True Blood is awesome! I wish the second season would come out on DVD faster so I could keep on watching it. The books are alright too though I think I prefer the show.

As to whether or not Louisiana is anything like that, I have no idea. I doubt it, but that's TV. The biggest stereotypes about the South in general are probably that everyone's ignorant, racist, and stuck in the past.

I did find some web-sites with a little more about the stereotypes if you're interested. They're not the most scholarly but I think they give a fairly good overview.

I'm sure the series exaggerates the common stereotypes, but before watching it I had no idea which traits are considered "typical" of that area, so I thought "Whoa, so that's the perception people have of Louisiana." Which doesn't necessarily mean Louisiana is really like that, like it always happens with stereotypes in general. It's just something I find interesting.

Well, it is a bit weird, the "vampire club" is the epitome of cliches (I mean, every single vampire in there is more or less goth, come on!) and the dialogues could be better... but I like it anyway. :P

It's not so much the cliché-ness of the storyline that got to me (or the shitty sex scenes). Why can't a girl fall in love with a fugly vampire and love him for being a vampire? Why does she have to fall in love with the sexy ones?

Well, as far as I can tell, it's described as a rural place where people are not really smart and generally full of prejudices. And where girls are rather slutty - apart from the main female character, who is, of course, a virgin. I guess those are more or less the general stereotypes about southern states, right? The only other series I can think of which had a similar setting (apart from the slutty girls, but there were still waitresses in tiny hot pants) was "Dukes of Hazzard", and it was set in Georgia.

Because if the vampire wasn't sexy, most of the target audience (i.e. women) wouldn't watch the show. ;)

Okay, rural is right, and education is poor (because money is hard to come by). I don't know about the slutty girls, because the South is also a deeply religious area. But I guess those of us from the "northern" states do tend to think of the South as culturally backwards or slow. We even had a war about that once, 140 years ago, and I think those prejudices still run pretty deep.

That said, I'm no expert, having never been anywhere in the south except the Atlanta airport and Florida (which doesn't really count, since its culture is heavily influenced by its proximity to Cuba).

Well, religion also plays a role in the series, mostly within the Afro-American community. And then there's the usual Christians vs vampires, as vampires are devil's children. It's also quite clear there's a parallel between vampires and homosexuals, as the "vampire party" says vampires should have the same civil right as mortal people.

(ah: comunque nel libro è esplicito - un po' meno nel telefilm in effetti, ma lo spirito satirico l'ho visto in altre sfumature - che il bar pieno di vampiri darkettoni è un modo per venire incontro a ciò che gli umani si aspettano dai vampiri. C'è pure una discreta sfanculata ai vampiri-dandy di Anne Rice, è spassosissimo!)

Oh man it's the best show ever. The books are apparently better BUT I've only read the first one and so far can't decide. I just love Bill and Eric so much :D
