My trip to Scotland was fantastic, I never thought I'd like it so much. Edinburgh itself is beautiful and the places I saw during my two trips were stunning.

I arrived during the last weekend of the Fringe Festival and the city was packed. I ended up seeing three plays chosen pretty much on a whim. As I walked into town the first evening, I saw the poster for "Nerd World Problems" and decided I had to see it. Then I looked up other shows at the same venue (there were A LOT) and two caught my attention: "Happily Never After" and "Holly Morgan is a Witch. Get her!" The former was a Tim Burtonesque improvised show (I'd never seen one before!): the actors asked the audience about our grandparents' jobs, then picked one (door-to-door make-up salesman) and built the whole show around it. The latter was a show about witches, feminism and patriarchy through the centuries, and was both hilarious and thought-provoking. And at the end we were given this cool badge!

On Tuesday I took a day trip to the Highlands. I saw Glencoe, which is breathtakingly beautiful, Loch Ness and the ruins of Urquhart Castle and Pitlochry. We didn't have much time, but I'm glad I went, the landscape was so different from anything I'd seen before.

The following days I visited St. Andrews and climbed Arthur's Seat, which was pretty much behind my residence. By the way, I was staying at Pollock Halls, a university residence. The building next to the reception looks like this:

I felt like I was staying at Hogwarts. XD

I took way too many photos (I posted some on Instagram), tried haggis, cranachan, whisky ice cream and drank more cider in a week than I usually do in a year. I was tavelling with hand luggage only, but I still managed to buy three Neil Gaiman books (hey, I found a bookshop that had a "Buy 3, Pay 2" offer, I couldn't miss it!), the "Snow, Glass, Apple" graphich novel (also written by Gaiman), some presents for two friends' children, some whisky for my mum, shortbread for my dad and my colleagues and a few things for myself.

While I was there I also found out that Neil Gaiman was in Edinburgh too! And that Jarvis Cocker from Pulp had a show there 2 days before I arrived. Typical. It must be fate, I'll NEVER see him live. D:

I'm back to work tomorrow, which is going to be crazy like every September, but in October... I'm going to Japan! I still can't believe it's really happening. I think I'll only believe it when I get off the plane at Narita. I'll try not to shout "YATTA!", but I can't guarantee anything. XD

Oops, I forgot to post again. I'll take advantage of the day off (today's a holiday in Italy) and write a quick update on my mobile. I've neglected LJ mainly because I've been going to the gym a lot lately and working on a couple of Good Omens ficlets (*GASP*). Hopefully I'll be able to post at least one before I go on holiday at the end of the month, it's almost done.

Did I mention I'm going to Edinburgh? It was a bit of a last-minute decision, the big plan is still to go to Japan in October (and I should really start booking things for that), but I'm going to need a break before the usual September madness at work, so I took an additional week off at the end of August. And the fact that I've been a little bit obsessed with David Tennant lately made me realise I've never been to Scotland and a colleague who worked in Edinburgh was always talking about what a beautiful place it is, so I thought "Why not?"

I just hope I'll understand the accent... XD
