gothikmaus: (Die beste Band der Welt)

I've been so busy since I came back from my little Tuscan holiday in July that not only I didn't write anything about it, but I also didn't write my usual post-concert recap when I got back from Berlin at the end of August. But my colleague has been home on prolonged sick leave for more than two months now (she was actually already gone when I got back to the office on July 22), and I've been doing the work of 2 and a half people since then, with various official visits to take care of and the end of fiscal year looming upon us. I'm surprised at how well I've been holding up so far, but now I'm really starting to feel it.

Anyway, talking about post-concert recaps, I'll write down what I still remember (thankfully I took notes on my mobile of the things I absolutely didn't want to forget.

The weather was great, which was a nice change compared to 2 years ago, when they had to cancel the Friday show because of a storm. I arrived at Tempelhof around 11:00 on Saturday morning, got my bracelet for the pit around 12:30, and then had a look at the pop-up store they had set up at the Columbia Theater nearby. You actually had to queue to enter, as the place wasn't very big, and I saw fans already waiting in line in the morning while I was on my way to get the bracelet. I ended up getting a T-shirt with Gwendoline's head inside a red heart, with crossed bones underneath and the three-dot umlaut above. I really love the design.

The concert itself was great. I wasn't aiming for front row (I'm getting too old for that), but I ended up in a very nice spot somewhere around the 10th row in front of Rod, where I could see perfectly.

Some of the highlights of the night:

• I loved the opening acts. The first one was a Japanese band called Malts Orchestra, which sounded like an anime soundtrack with a rock twist. And the frontman actually reminded me of a friend on mine. The second one was a ska/punk/rock band from Mexico, Pantheon Rococo, which had something like 11 band members. Very different from the first band, but I liked both.

• The DÄ concert was amazing. They played 3 hours as usual, but because they had to finish by 10:00 PM, they started at 7:00 PM, which I didn't mind at all.(Yes, I am definitely getting old.) The setlist was a little different, I was expecting them to open with Himmelblau like they had done for the last few years, instead they opened with "Nicht allein".

• Rod looked extra dapper in a purple suit. He was standing in front of a series of Orange speakers, but at one point he opened one and it turned out that one of the speakers was actually a fridge where he kept his drinks! XD

• There wasn't a lot of banter between Bela and Farin, but at one point Bela said something along the lines of "It's like when I say I love you during sex." That brought back a lot of memories...

• Bela also shouted "Stop! Something's happened!" during "Anti-Zombie" and had the others stop playing because a fan was feeling unwell and had to be taken away. And then commented something like "Well, right during a song about dead people..."

• There was a lot of pogoing and quite a few walls of death. But Bela wasn't satisfied and commented "Ich hab grösser beim Taylor Swift gesehen." ("I've seen bigger ones at Taylor Swift concerts.") XD

• Rod. My God. During "Die Banane" at one point he was playing bass with his left hand, keyboards with his right hand and singing all at the same time. WTH. After the song Bela also pointed that out to the audience in case someone hadn't notice.

• Also during "Die Banane" a group of fans in the front row was waving around inflatable bananas. And during a few other songs a fan was wearing a big Pikachu costume, which isn't the most comfortable thing to wear at a rock concert. But it got noticed, and I saw a video of that fan being brought on stage the next day for the last concert of the weekend.

• And talking about fans, on top of the usual bras, someone threw a big, knitted snail on stage. DÄ fans are really something. :D

• They played "Gehn wie ein Ägypter"! I don't think I'd ever heard it live before. And they used Sylt-shaped guitars which spat sparks during the chorus.

• At the end Farin was making all kinds of heart-shape gestures: with thumb and index finger, with index and middle finger, with his whole hand, even with his arms. He's such a goofball.

And that's it. I wish I could have stayed in Berlin longer, but in the end I saw an amazing concert, visited a place I had never been to before (Holzmarkt 25) and even managed to meet up with a friend. All in little more than 48 hours, so I'm not complaining. And let's not forget the yummy gözleme I had at the Maybachufer Markt! A must of my Berlin trips! :D
