gothikmaus: (CSI - Greg Sanders)
[personal profile] gothikmaus
I wasn't as productive as last year fanart-wise, but I did write quite a lot, so I'm doing a fanfiction and fanart overview as well. I'm also adding an End of Year Creative Reflection thing I found on Tumblr.

FANFICTION OVERVIEW 2021
Total number of fanfics: 8

Buzz cut (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG-13)

Halloween cliché (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG)

Strong (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG-13)

Shake (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG)

Sleep (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG)

Nick/Greg Advent Calendar 2021 (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG to NC-17)

Not-so-white Christmas (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated G)

Forget (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Rated PG-13)

And I have 5 WIPs I'm currently working on, all CSI. I'm considering the ficlet collection I wrote for the Advent Calendar as one collective fanfic, otherwise the total number would be 31 (GASP!)

FANART OVERVIEW 2021

Total number of pieces of fanart: 20

Fandom breakdown:
Good Omens: 10
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:1
Lupin the Third: 1
Die Ärzte: 2
Neopets: 1
Original: 5

Overall Thoughts:
I didn't draw much compared to 2020, especially in the second part of the year, but it wasn't too bad. I wish I had experimented more, though.

Looking back, did you draw more fanart than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
I didn't know what to expect, I only knew I wouldn't be drawing as much as I had in 2020.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you draw that you would never have predicted in January?
I didn't expect I'd be drawing Dante Alighieri. Or a chicken wearing a Santa hat. XD

What's your own favourite piece of fanart of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
This Erianthe and Alphaios drawing I did for Martina H's birthday. I'm particularly happy with how Alphaios's legs and hooves turned out.

Do you have any fanart or prolific goals for the New Year?
I'd like to use my graphic tablet and Clip Studio Paint more, I'm sure I've only been using a tiny part of its potential. And maybe work more on that "original project".

From my past year of fanart, what was...

My best piece of fanart this year:
This Erianthe and Alphaios drawing

My most popular piece of fanart of this year:
This Erianthe/Alphaios mini-comic

Fanart of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
This silly Elizabethan Good Omens cartoon. It's far from perfect, but I thought it was quite funny, especially Crowley's pose.

Most fun piece of fanart to draw:
This silly Good Omens cartoon based on the expression meme. Because I just love drawing silly expression.

Piece of fanart with the single sexiest moment:
I didn't really draw anything "sexy" this year. Maybe this Crowley pic?

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" piece of fanart:
Not exactly wrong, but I thought "WTF, brain?!" when I got the idea for this silly Christmas card. XD

Hardest piece of fanart to draw:
This monster mermaid I drew for Mermay. I wanted to try something different from my usual style.

Biggest Surprise:
Maybe this Jigen/Goemon piece? I always say I want to draw Jigen more, but never actually do, so I was glad I drew him at least once this year.

In conclusion:
I need to draw and experiment more if I want to improve.

End of the year creative reflection (found on panchostokes's Tumblr page)

1) What is your favorite thing you created? Which work are you the proudest of?
Probably the Nick/Greg Advent Calendar ficlets. I wasn't planning on doing an Advent Calendar this year, as I hadn't written anything up until September, but then I stumbled into Nick/Greg fanfiction... And the rest is history.

2) Is there anything else you are proud of that you achieved this year?
Submitting a short story to a local literary contest. I was quite proud of myself for finishing it (and actually submitting it!) and for once I thought it was quite good and may be shortlisted. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

3) Did you explore anything new this year? (A new way to be creative, a trope you didn’t write before or an idea you hadn’t thought of earlier, etc.)
The CSI fandom and Nick/Greg. I also found out I quite enjoy writing and reading hurt/comfort fics. (Which is probably related to all the stress I went through this year...)

4) Which work gave you the most difficulty? What was your biggest creative challenge this year?
I struggled a bit with fanart and art in general, as I didn't have much time and motivation, especially during the summer. I think this piece I drew for Mermay was the one I found most difficult, because I was trying to do something different from my usual style. I also put some real effort in the original short story I wrote for the literary contest. It didn’t get shortlisted, but I’m still quite proud of it.

5) Which work brought you the most joy?
The Nick/Greg Advent Calendar. Every night when I was already in bed I would write down ideas so I wouldn't forget them, and every morning I woke up with new ideas. It was an amazing feeling.

6) Which of your works do you think people should check out?
The Nick/Greg Advent Calendar and the ongoing Hurt/Comfort ficlet series.

7) Do you have creative plans for next year? Is there anything exciting you are currently working on?
I have a few WIPs I want to finish: five Nick/Greg (two ficlets for the Hurt/Comfort prompt list, two "longer" fics, and a fluffy little thing I started just the other day) and one Greg/Morgan (but it's just a tiny snippet at the moment, I’m not even sure I’ll actually finish it). And I might look up another literary contest: I had fun writing that story, even if it didn't get shortlisted in the end, so I might give it another go. I’ll also try to draw more.

8) Lastly, any words of wisdom or anything else you would like to share?
I never expected to become so invested in CSI and Nick/Greg, but I'm definitely not complaining, as I've been incredibly inspired and productive: up until September I hadn't written a single word, while now, according to AO3, I have more than 11,000 words published in 2021. And about 7,000 from the various WIPs I'm currently working on. And for my standards, that's A LOT, especially considering I started writing in this fandom in September, not even 4 months ago. This fandom has kept me sane in a very difficult time, and I'll forever be grateful for that.

LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING

What did you do in 2021 that you'd never done before?
I had to manage the hotel reservations for some important official visits.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Like I've been doing for the last few years, I wanted to read more books, but I focused more on fanfiction again. But it's what kept me sane in a very difficult year, so who cares. I also wanted to improve my drawing and colouring technique, which I'm not sure I did, even if I tried.

As for next year, I'll stick to the "read more books" resolution. I'll also try to finish the WIPs I'm currently working on and keep drawing. And maybe write more original stuff.
