Here's the original interview, in which he says us Europeans aresmart lucky and understand irony, whereas in America "irony is lost everywhere". And that little smile hints at some personal experience, I'm sure.
Now, I don't want to generalise, but there's a reason if we beg students applying for a high school year in the US to "please avoid humour" in their presentation letters. But really, irony is such a subtle thing, it's just so easy to be misunderstood even in your own country among people who speak the same language.
