gothikmaus: (Hawaii Five-O)

My two cents about yesterday's Hawaii Five-0 episode, inspired by something I read in [livejournal.com profile] delicatale's journal.

Let's start with a list of stuff I liked:

- GHOSTBUSTER THEEEME

- GRAAACE

- "Wonder Woman. Slutty Wonder Woman."

- "Stop it, Danno."

- "Don't wow me!"

- MAAAX

- Sneaky Danno. Apartment-hunting can be tough.

- Danny fixing his hair! Steve telling him "That's not gonna help you, just be yourself."

- "Don't you have someone to go shoot?"
"No, no. Hey, heard you guys had a lovely dinner."

- "I know where I would hide."

- "It costs an extra 50 bucks, you only cost me a beer."

And now for something a little less random. [livejournal.com profile] delicatale said that Danny trying to get the landlady to lower the rent felt "Italian". At first I didn't understand what she meant, but then I realised it's true. And that made me realise that a lot of what Danny does feels "Italian" and that's probably the reason why I don't seem to have a problem with a lot of the things people complain about.

Some people have complained about the way Danny acts, saying he's overprotective, sleazy and no way the "old Danny" would act like that, the writers are doing a terrible job. Example: the slutty Wonder Woman comment. Well, maybe that's because I'm Italian and I'm used to Italian men being cavemen, but that didn't sound offensive to me, it actually made me laugh. I'm also used to working among men and I can assure you women get worse comments: once I went to a client with a colleague and, I swear, he opened the door and introduced me saying "Guys! I have a woman for you!" And the guy who said it was generally nice and polite and not sexist. It was just the general sense of humour in our office.

Anyway, Lori didn't want them to know she was at a party, of course Steve and Danny would get curious. Remember the scene Steve made when Danny wouldn't tell him what his lunch was? How is this any different? The more you try to hide something and look nervous about it, the more those two are gonna pry.

And about Danny being sleazy. He's been chasing skirts right from the start: the Kono handshake when they first meet; the girls in the car next to them when they go undercover in episode 3, he all but begged Steve to go back, who cares about the case. And that doesn't make him a horrible person. A bit of an idiot maybe, yes, but he's just a regular guy who likes sport and women. Lori is a colleague, one that shows no emotions and is always extremely professional, but she's also an attractive woman, I think any straight man would wonder what costume she would wear and what she would look like.

And don't get me started on the "overprotective dad" thing. Italian fathers can do worse. Much, much worse.

So, yeah, maybe the writers really are doing a terrible job, but luckily my upbringing allows me to ignore all the suckage and concentrate on the funny side.

Also, I'm beginning to like Lori. A lot of people seem to have a problem with her calling Danny "Danno". Well, he was teasing her, she teased him back, I think that's perfectly understandable, I would've done the same.

Wow, that got long. It's just that I really liked this episode, and seeing people complain about everything is beginning to annoy me.

Interesting what you say about Danny, because I'm finding it the same way. He hasn't seemed at all 'off' to me. I'm not Italian, but I come from a working class background, so I've known a lot of rough diamonds, and I've worked and socialized in male-dominated circles pretty much all my life.

As for Danny appreciating women, well, we all ogle Alex/Steve when he's shirtless, so how can I criticize Danny for enjoying the scenery? Plus, if I had a hunky male colleague who was evasive about what he'd worn to a party, I'd pry and make a joke about it, too.

Exactly. Or the scene when Steve and Lori first meet, with Steve eyeing her up. Well, sorry, but I do that too when I'm bored out of my mind in a waiting room or on the underground and someone hot enters my field of view. I appreciate beauty, does that make me a bad person?

I would have liked it if Lori flipped him off. I don't mind Danny appreciated women, but the slutty wonder woman comment went a little over bored.

Like, if a hunky guy buddy I knew was being evasive about his costume, my next guess wouldn't have been "Dildo man?" I mean, it has more to do with him not even knowing Lori enough to do that, would he do that to Kono? or was it because he doesn't know her that he feels he can get away with it.

Danny acted like Danny last night and sometimes Danny does douchey things. my two cents. I enjoyed the hell out of the ep.

I think Danny was just teasing her because she was being so secretive. She looked very nervous, like she really didn't want her colleagues to know she was dressed up. Add to that Kono's comment about her looking "inappropriate" and I think most guys would think of a sexy costume.

But maybe I got it all wrong and it's the word "slutty" that people find offensive? Like, maybe it would've been more acceptable if he's said "Sexy Wonder Woman"?

Maybe sexy Wonder Woman would have been better. I dunno. it wasn't anything major i just couldn't see Danny doing that to Kono so maybe it was shoehorning more Lori into stuff that irked.

*shrugs* didn't detract from my enjoyment of the ep.

I think Lori is one of those people who are very easy to embarrass, you just need to know what buttons to push. If you tried something like that with Kono, she would probably have a dozen comebacks ready. Or a right hook. Or both.

And all the things I mentioned in my post weren't a problem for me either, but I've seen them mentioned by different people and it made me wonder why.
