Oops, he did it again
Sep. 13th, 2003 02:47 pmSomebody please stop him. I don't know how much you know about Italian history, but I suppose you've all heard of a certain Mr Mussolini. And if you watch the news or read newspapers you'll also know who Mr Berlusconi is, i.e. our dear Prime Minister. Well, the other day the media reported an excerpt from one of Mr Berlusconi's many interviews, in which he stated that Mussolini was a positive dictator: he never killed anyone and only sent his enemies on holiday abroad. Try and tell that to the thousands of Italian Jews he sent to various concentration camps. Oh, right, you can't; most of them are DEAD. But he didn't kill them. What about Matteotti? Mussolini publicly stated he was responsible for his death. But he didn't kill him. And about Galeazzo Ciano, his son-in-law? Well, Mussolini's daughter ended up a widow, but he didn't kill him.
Mr Berlusconi then defended himself saying it was all a misunderstanding, he is most definitely not a neo-fascist, he just wanted to say that our dictator was better than their dictator, i.e. Saddam Hussein.
Not to be rude, but what. The. Fuck. A dictatorship is a dictatorship. Period.
And then he ended his speech in his usual way: it's all the communists' fault. I'm so tired of having to listen to this sentence at least once a week. What will it take to make him understand he's not McCarthy and we're not in the '50s any more?
He says the communist regime killed millions of people and communists are still a threat to Italy and the whole world, so they don't have the right to criticise him, they should only be ashamed of themselves for sharing the same socialist ideals.
Stalin was a tyrant, and that's for sure. But so were Hitler and Mussolini. So is Castro and whoever is in charge these days in China and North Korea. There isn't left or right in a dictatorship, there's only a façade that hides the real thing. By saying that Mussolini was better than Stalin or Saddam, Berlusconi only confirmed that he thinks he's superior to human laws and he can say whatever he wants because, hey, he's the Prime Minister.
I shudder at the thought of what the European politicians must think of our country.
