Bela didn't know why he had woken up, but he could feel something in the air.

First he saw a flash of lightning illuminate the sky, the outlines of the trees surrounding the house visible only for a second behind the drawn curtains.

Then he heard the distant roll of thunder, low and deep and slowly rising in volume.

And finally the sound of rain hitting the roof and windows, filling the silence like a quiet drumbeat.

Bela loved stormy nights. Even moreso there, where the air smelled of wet grass and pine leaves and not of damp concrete and piss, and there were no alarms wailing, only birds chirping and the occasional bell from some faraway church. He had always made fun of Farin for deciding to live in the woods like a bloody hermit, but at moments like that, he could clearly see why his friend liked it so much.

"A storm's approaching," he said, his voice sounding louder than he had intended.

Farin didn't reply. He lay cuddled behind Bela, an arm draped loosely over the drummer's waist. Bela turned over and looked at him.

"Are you asleep?"

"Yes," the guitarist replied and opened his eyes.

Bela smiled. With his tousled hair and sleepy expression, Farin looked positively adorable. He leaned in and gave him a light kiss on the lips.

"What was that for?" Farin asked, looking amused.

"Do I need a reason to kiss you?"

"You usually have ulterior motives."

Bela pouted. "You offend me."

Farin gently pushed him onto his back and snuggled closer, pressing his face against his friend's neck.

"Shut up and let me sleep."

Bela ran a hand through Farin's hair. He remembered his sister used to be afraid of storms as a child, she would crawl into his bed at night and he would hold her and tell her she didn't need to worry, he would always be there to protect her.

Farin didn't need to be protected. He was strong and confident, and definitely not afraid of storms. But when he was lying in his arms, half-asleep and utterly relaxed, he reminded Bela of the young, affection-starved boy he had met so many years before, the same boy he had grown to love so much it almost scared him.

He wrapped his arms around him and closed his eyes, the constant patter of rain lulling him back to sleep.
