8th September 1943: the government announces that on the 3rd September Italy signed an armistice with the Allies. Why announcing it after 5 days? To have the time to withdraw the troops maybe? No. Screw the troops, let's leave the soldiers behind, right in the hands of the Nazi army. They used those 5 days to organise the king's flight from Rome. OK, he was the king, the head of the state, they needed to save him. I can understand that. But nobody had the faintest idea of what to do after the armistice had been signed, it was total chaos. The fascists understood that Germany couldn't possibly win and just decided to switch sides, without giving a second thought to what that would mean for the thousands of soldiers that were still abroad.

And now they want to celebrate that day. Excuse me for being thick, but what's there to celebrate? A king who betrayed his country and even abandoned his daughter in order to save his arse? The beginning of a 19-month civil war? What? I know perfectly well that the armistice had to be signed, the war had been a suicide from the beginning, but there must have been an alternative to that farce. I just hope the president will remind everybody of what really happened, not just deliver some rhetorical speech on the armistice being the end of the war, because it wasn't.
