acadine: analogize yourself to a literary figure.
I think I'll be Frederic Brown. When I first read "Sentry" in high school I thought: "I want to write like that!" In just a short, one-page story he's able to deceive the reader, when you think you have it all figured out he turns it all upside-down. It's all a matter of point of view. I've been writing mostly 100-word drabbles lately and "Sentry" is still my ideal model. I like to add final twists that will leave the reader thinking: "WTF? I never saw that coming!" I wrote a couple of longer fics that ended that way, but not in the HP fandom.
I also enjoy mixing humour and angst, like E.M. Remarque did in "All Quiet on the Western Front". That novel had me both laughing and sobbing, and the ending was quite unexpected too. So, I guess I see myself as a weird mix of the two.
