The club was small and almost empty, the audience consisting of some friends they had dragged along plus a few regulars. The stage could barely fit them, there was just enough room to move without knocking into the drum kit. The acoustics could be better. Their fee was a couple of free drinks each.
But they didn't give a damn. They'd finally found somewhere to play their songs.
Dirk turned to Jan. "Nervous?"
"No. You?"
"Nope."
"Liar. Your hands are trembling."
"And you've started biting your nails again."
They looked at each other and grinned. "Let's rock this crappy place."

The pain was bearable. They had given him so many painkillers he could barely feel his body. His right arm was covered with burns, carefully hidden by immaculate white bandages. The doctors had told him the damage to his face had been minimal, they could make him look as if nothing ever happened.
He didn't care. The real agony was seeing all those familiar faces - his parents, his sister, Mareike, even Rod - everyone but him. He knew Jan was out of the country. He understood. But the wounds in his chest hurt much more than the ones on his skin.

Bela was startled by the comment. He had been fumbling in his duffel bag for a clean T-shirt and hadn't heard Farin enter the room
"The burns will always be there."
Farin walked up behind him and put his hands on Bela's waist. "Does it bother you?"
Bela shrugged. Farin leaned down and kissed his shoulder. Bela's skin was soft and cool from the shower he had just taken. His lips slid slowly downwards, over the still pristine tattoo and further. Bela shivered.
"I don't care what it looks like. Just as long as you're here."
