Someone tell me: is the Eurovision Song Contest really such a big thing? I remember everyone was talking about it years ago when I used to write in the Cure Forum, but I thought it was just some weird forum tradition.

Apparently, it's much more than that. Here it's not even shown on TV...

Italy didn't participate for years, your country was at ESC till 1993, then paused, participated in 1997. Then nothing till today. Here's your ESC history:

Jalisse went to Eurovision??? HAHAHA, sorry, but they're such a joke in Italy, nodoby knew them, they won the Sanremo Festival in 1997 (with the same song they sang at Eurovision), everyone talked about them for a couple of months and then... they disappeared. XD

That's normal. Germany has always terrible songs, sends terrible "artists", because no high rated artist would risk to disgrace himself there. That's why we only achieve the last place so often. XD XD

It's a pretty huge deal in eastern Europe, probably because they haven't been competing for so long, and I know it's a big thing in Scandinavia too. It's kind of surprising that Italy doesn't compete anymore, since you've sort of got a built-in qualifier (Sanremo) and the Eurovision format was actually originally based on the Sanremo festival. Italy was one of the six original countries, too.

The politics of Eurovision in and of themselves are fascinating to me. Really a window into the mindsets and histories of very many countries.

Here, it's a matter of much frustation because we haven't won in 20 years or something. And or contestants always come in last. The problem is that all of our popular musicians refuse to make fools of themselves, so we only ever send third and fourth league bands. The whole thing is a stupid farce anyway and I never watch it.;)
