As a general rule: words ending in "o" are male and words ending in "a" are female. The male plural ends in "i" and the female plural ends in "e".
Example:
male cat = gatto
male cats = gatti
female cat = gatta
female cats = gatte
And then there are the eeevil exceptions. Sooo interessant, oder? *rolls eyes*
